THE Derek Roylance Widnes Cup Final will take place on Saturday at Stobart Stadium between three times winners Cronton Villa and the competition’s highest scorers and one time winners St Michaels.
The final is set to be a showcase for great amateur football from two Widnes clubs and a bumper crowd is expected. St Michaels have scored 22 goals and 17 of those goals coming from two players – Paul Derbyshire with nine and Mike Holland close behind with eight.
The next leading scorer in the charts is Cronton Villa’s John McEvoy with six goals after netting four against Pex Hill. Cronton are also the second highest scorers of the comp with 14 goals.
This should add to a free scoring final match at the Stobart Stadium on Saturday, the game kicking off at 3pm, admission being £2 for adults with accompanied children free.
St Michaels 5 Halebank 3.
Halebank took the lead from a corner when Matty Perry managed to rise above St Mikes defence with a perfectly placed header.
St Mikes probed for an equaliser and got it when Mike Holland fired low and hard past the stranded keeper.
After the break St Mikes had a flurry of attacks which resulted in Paul Derbyshire wrong footing the Halebank defence and shooting across the keeper low into the far corner. From a Lee Woolham free kick a number of heads went up together and the ball ricochet off defender Neil Greenfield into the St Mikes net to make it 2-2 at full time.
Goals from Paul Derbyshire, who made no mistake from a rebound, and Holland’s second took the game beyond Halebank. Halebank pushed even more men forward to gain something from the match and were rewarded with Matty Perry’s second.
However, Derbyshire completed his hat trick to make absolutely certain.
Cronton Villa 7 Pex Hill 1.
Villa’s opener from Jon McAvoy came from a header at the near post and the second was an own goal by right back Craig Pye.
Pex Hill played some nice tidy football and Carl Fonterigo slotted home a well taken goal to make it 2-1 at half time.
Tom O’Hanlon saved a penalty from Pex Hill’s captain Terry Cartwright and changed the game with Cronton’s McAvoy netting after a challenge with the keeper.
McAvoy earned his hat-trick after a nice run onto the ball from the right had side to finish with confidence. Substitutes Nathan Clare and Aaron Allen seemed to add the extra fizz into Cronton’s game now with left back Paul Roberts scoring off his free kick to make it 5-1. Nathan Clare soon after made it six. Ste Dennett neatly pulled the ball out the air to finish left footed past the Pex Hill keeper to wrap up the scoring.
