NOSTALGIC photographs promise to rekindle memories at a historic exhibition in Widnes.

Fairfield High School is holding an open day to reflect on its life as it prepares to close on July 21 and merge with Wade Deacon.

Former pupils and local residents are invited to browse round old pictures and memorabilia and have guided tours of the school on Saturday, from 9.30am to 12 noon.

Nick McGee, deputy head, said: “This is chance for people to recollect and remember, meet old friends and be reminded of the days when they were at school.

“It is open to anyone.

“It would be lovely to see as many faces as possible.”

Girls have been taught at the site since the 1930s and boys since the 1950s. Fairfield High School opened in 1967.

Staff met former colleagues at a reunion ball on Saturday.

Former head teacher David Blacow and former teacher Margarette Leahy were among the special guests.

Mr McGee has seen many changes since joining Fairfield in 1982.

He said: “There have been incredible changes in the world of education.

“Our focus has always been on enjoyment as well as learning.

“It’s a warm and welcoming school. Every child matters.

“Lots of our pupils have gone on to make careers in the performing arts and that’s something we’re very proud of and will continue in the new school.”

Mel C is a former pupil.

From September, pupils will join Wade Deacon and will be taught at both sites until new buildings are constructed.
