Bridge Timber regained the Runcorn Sunday League Premier Division title with Liam Sweeney grabbing a hat trick to dash EBL's hopes of a clean sweep.
EBL started the better of the 2 sides and nearly had the lead after 5 minutes when Kev Toweys cross was headed against the cross bar by ex Timber midfielder Paul Hives, Lee Evans was on hand to clear,. Ste Coady had a volley on target in the 14th minute , John Barnes in the EBL goal saved with ease to keep it 0-0.
Bridge dealt with wave after wave of EBL pressure, Karl Jenkins,Peter Murphy, Jamie Cumpper and captain Lee Evans all defending well until the 26th minute when from a set piece EBL took the lead from a header which somehow squeezed inside the post.
Both teams then cancelled each other out without really threatening each others keeper until the 2nd half, Andy Gott and Lewis Watson worked tirelessly to get Bridge into the game, Jordan Neary,Who came on for the injured Ste Coady proved to be a threat down the right and Karl Thomas, Timbers lone forward for much of the game led the line well without getting a clear chance on goal but Timber gradually started to find space and had more of the ball, Andy Gott had a clear cut chance to level in the 70th minute but his header flashed past the post from Ste Appleton's accurate cross.
But 3 minutes later and with the introduction of Ste Hickson, Andy Stringers kick upfield was headed on by Andy Gott, Liam Sweeney ghosted through and side footed home for 1-1. Liam Sweeney then put Bridge 2-1 up in the 80th minute when his shot was deflected past Barnes in the EBL goal and 7 minutes later, after a shot was cleared by Barnes, Sweeney closed him down and the ball hit Sweeney and flew goal wards for 3-1. Liam Sweeney was awarded the man of the match by EBL.
