FAMILIES were given the opportunity to scatter the ashes of their veteran loved ones at sea in a special Remembrance Day service.
Co-op Funeralcare S-Rigby, on Victoria Road in Runcorn, and Co-op Funeralcare, on Albert Road in Widnes, commemorated Remembrance Day with a ferry voyage and service.
For the past 15 years, the two funeral homes have marked Remembrance Day with members of the community.
This year was no exception, as the ferry set sail to scatter the ashes of attendees loved ones in a private service.
Piper Major James Axon played Amazing Grace before the ferry returned to land for the Remembrance Day service yesterday, Sunday.
A minute’s silence was held at 11am, followed by wartime poems, hymns and readings. The commemoration was also attended by cadets and veterans, the RNLI and the Port Sunlight Sea Dogs.
“It was incredibly moving to be a part of such a special Remembrance Day service that encourages us to reflect on the important lessons of history and remind us of the bravery and selflessness of those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today,” said Hannah Paddon, funeral services manager for the West Lancashire and North Cheshire region of Co-op Funeralcare.
“As a member-owned organisation, we strive to support causes close to our hearts, so hosting a Remembrance Day service that truly honours the sacrifices made by countless individuals was a fitting way to do just that.
“It was a heartfelt day for everyone involved and a privilege to give families an opportunity to scatter the ashes of their veteran loved ones out at sea.”
