THE Silver Jubilee Bridge erupted into a kaleidoscope of colour for a stunning riverside show on Sunday night.

This year’s free firework display was staged two days early and the time brought forward to give more people the chance to see it.

Tens of thousands of spectators gathered on the banks of the River Mersey in Runcorn and Widnes and countless vantage points to watch the dazzling display.

The spectacular fireworks were synchronised to music from the past five decades to celebrate Halton’s 50th anniversary.

Families sang along to well-known tracks as the sky turned red, white and golden amid bangs and explosions.

The new earlier time proved popular as crowds were bigger than usual.

A Halton Council spokesman said: “We moved the display to help people get there easier.

“More people are off work on Sunday so are not rushing to have their tea and get the family out.

“It started a bit earlier as well as children had school the next day.”

Many organised displays are now held at the weekend if November 5 falls on a week day.

This year’s display was only able to go ahead thanks to the generosity of local businesses.

Creamfields, Marshalls/CDP, Langtree, Halton Housing and Tarmac sponsored the fireworks.

The Silver Jubilee Bridge was closed to vehicles all day Sunday to enable the pyrotechnic team to set up the display.
