AN amber flood alert remains in place for parts of Widnes and Runcorn today, Friday.
A series of warnings and alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency over the past 48 hours following periods of heavy and prolonged rainfall.
The alert is for the River Mersey and River Weaver, stating ‘flooding is possible – be prepared’.
The Mersey alert states: “This flood alert has been issued due to the high tide forecast this afternoon.
“We currently do not anticipate the flood alert level to be met during this high tide.
“But the current forecast anticipates the flood alert level will be met during the high tide in the early hours of Saturday morning.
“Our incident rooms are on standby, and we are closely monitoring the situation.
“Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near watercourses, and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.
“This message will be updated this afternoon by 5pm, or as the situation changes.”
Meanwhile, the Weaver alert states: “River levels remain high, and flooding of roads and low-lying land is still possible today.
“Flooding may affect locations near the River Weaver, with low0lying land and roads expected to be most affected.
“This is particularly around low-lying land and roads around the Rivers Weaver, Ducklow and Wheelock, and their tributaries.
“We are closely monitoring the situation. This message will be updated this afternoon by 5pm, or as the situation changes.”
