THE date on which Warrington’s new TJ Hughes store will open has now been confirmed.
It follows the announcement last month that the department store chain would be opening in the town, having closed its Widnes location.
Having downed shutters for the final time at Green Oaks Shopping Centre in Widnes, it was confirmed that TJ Hughes would be moving to Golden Square Shopping Centre.
The retailer was once based in what is now The Hive on Sankey Street, before it closed with all other stores in 2011.
But the new store will open before the end of this month in the old Debenhams unit in Golden Square, which has sat empty since its closure in 2021.
An update on the store opening has now been given by the retailer, which said: “Exciting Times.
“Your new TJ Hughes store opens in Warrington’s Golden Square Shopping Centre in just seven days’ time.
“The store will open at 10am on Thursday, October 24, with vouchers for the first 50 customers through the door.
“From beauty to bedding, clothing to kitchen, and toys to Christmas, there will be something for everyone.”
TJ Hughes said, with ‘deep regret’, that it was ‘extremely saddened’ to close its Widnes store due to a new lease not being agreed, but that the Warrington move was an ‘important step’.
“Warrington is a fantastic location, convenient for many shoppers, and we believe this will be good for both the town and for our brand’s exciting future,” a spokesman previously said.
On the move, TJ Hughes COO Jason Harmer previously said: “Returning to Warrington, where we have a strong history, is something we are really excited about.
“We will be recruiting 25 staff for the new store, and this move is part of the broader growth of the TJ Hughes estate.”
TJ Hughes was founded by Thomas Hughes in Liverpool back in 1912, growing to become a national chain before being saved from administration in 2011.
It brands itself as being a ‘provider of designer brands and quality goods at discounted prices’, and it also has a store in neighbouring St Helens.
