POLICE have launched an investigation and are appealing for information following the sad death of a 60-year-old woman on the M56 near Warrington.

Cheshire Police officers responded to an incident between junctions 10, Warrington and junctions 11, Runcorn on the motorway at around 8.24pm on Friday evening.

They attended the scene and found that a 60-year-old woman from Northwich had fallen from a bridge above the carriageway and had been struck by a number of vehicles.

Sadly, she was confirmed dead at the scene.

An investigation into how the woman came to be on the bridge remains ongoing.

And officers are appealing to anyone who may have been travelling between junctions 10 and junctions 11 of the M56 between 8.15pm and 8.30pm on the day of the incident.

Cheshire police are urging any one who witnessed the incident, or has any dashcam footage, to come forward.

Officers are also urging any motorists who were travelling on the westbound carriageway who believe they may have hit the pedestrian to get in touch.

Sergeant Simon Degg, of the Constabulary's Roads and Crime Unit, said: "Our enquiries into how the pedestrian came to be on the A49 overbridge remain ongoing, and we are asking any motorists who were travelling on the M56 between junction 10 and 11 for Warrington and may have witnessed the incident, or captured it on dashcam, to please get in touch.

"I would also urge any motorists who were on the westbound side of the carriageway at around the time of the incident or immediately after it occurred and who believe they may have struck the pedestrian to also contact us."
