FIREFIGHTERS tackled a roadside fire in Widnes last night.
Crews were called to the incident on Sullivan Road at 9.35pm.
They found that smoke was coming from a pile of wood chippings at the site of the road.
Firefighters dug the pile out and cooled the smouldering wood chippings with water.
A thermal imaging camera ensured the temperature was reduced before the crew left.
It is believed the fire started due to the pile self-heating.
One fire engine from Penketh attended the scene.
