RESIDENTS are being warned that ‘flooding is possible’ in Widnes and Runcorn.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the towns for land close to the River Mersey estuary, urging people to ‘be prepared’.

The alert states: “This flood alert has been issued due to the high tide forecast this afternoon, Friday.

“Flooding is possible at low-lying lands and roads from 1pm. Flooding of property is not expected.

“We currently anticipate the flood alert level to be met during the next high tide during the early hours of tomorrow morning, Saturday.

“Our incident rooms are on standby, and we are closely monitoring the situation.

“Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near watercourses, and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

“This message will be updated this afternoon by 5pm, or as the situation changes.”
