A MAJOR bank has confirmed its intention to close its Runcorn branch.
Halifax says it will be closing its Runcorn Shopping City location and cash machine for good next year.
The official closing date for the Orchard Walk branch has been confirmed as April 29, 2025.
Halifax said in a statement: “Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch.
“Most customers are now using our mobile banking app, online banking or calling us instead.
“This means they are using branches, including our Runcorn branch, much less.
“Because of this, we will be closing our Runcorn branch.”
Runcorn MP Mike Amesbury has commented on the planned closure, stating that he is concerned at the impact on Halifax customers who prefer a face-to-face service.
He said: “I am disappointed to learn Halifax is closing its Runcorn branch and ATM, with the nearest alternative outlets at Widnes and Warrington.
“This is bound to cause inconvenience for customers who use branch services, especially if they rely on public transport.
“While many people have moved to online banking, not everyone is comfortable with that option.
“I am sure the branch will be missed, including among local businesses.”
Mr Amesbury stressed some banking services were available at the nearby Post Office and Beacon Savings and Loans, formerly named Halton Credit Union.
He added that the Labour Government has pledged to open 350 new banking hubs over the next five years, to keep a banking presence in communities that have lost access to physical branch services.
He also said that business minister Gareth Thomas MP recently agreed to meet with him to discuss setting up a banking hub in his constituency of Runcorn and Helsby, given the continuing decline in branch services.
The nearest alternative Halifax branches are Albert Road in Widnes and Buttermarket Street in Warrington.

Other banking services are available at Runcorn Post Office at Runcorn Shopping City, while the nearest alternative ATM is at Nationwide Building Society, again in Shopping City.
