RESIDENTS have been warned that flooding is possible in Widnes, as well as the fringes of Runcorn.
The Environment Agency is urging people to be prepared for that possibility in areas of the borough close to the River Mersey.
A flood alert has been issued for the Mersey Estuary, with a high tide forecast.
The alert is to peak in the early hours of tomorrow morning, Wednesday, with an update to be provided should the situation worsen.
The flood alert, issued this afternoon, Tuesday, reads: “This flood alert has been issued due to the high tide forecast in the early hours of tomorrow morning, Wednesday.
“Flooding is possible at low-lying lands and roads from 1am on Tuesday.
“We currently do not anticipate the flood alert level to be met during the next high tide around midday tomorrow.
“However, we are expecting the flood alert to be met during the early hours of the morning on Thursday and Friday.
“Flood warnings may also be issued for these high tides.
“Our incident rooms are on standby, and we are closely monitoring the situation.
“Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near watercourses, and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.
“This message will be updated tomorrow or as the situation changes.”
