RUNCORN’S MP says the new Labour Government will ‘turbocharge’ growth in the town.
Labour MP Mike Amesbury was elected to serve the new constituency of Runcorn and Helsby, created with boundary changes from his former Weaver Vale seat.
He has praised the Government's intentions to ‘turbocharge’ economic growth in both towns, as well as the UK as a whole.
Mr Amesbury said: “This is an ambitious agenda to create wealth and opportunity throughout the nation, including in my constituency.
“Let there be no mistake, we have turned the page on 14 years of Conservative misrule.
“We are rebuilding our country and ensuring the Government once again serves the interests of working people.”
Mr Amesbury applauded the proposed legislation that would impose VAT on private schools to pay for the recruitment of 6,500 state-school teachers with specialised training.
He further welcomed the commitment to reduce waiting lists for NHS services and enhance mental health resources, rendering mental health issues as important as physical health issues.
An initiative to ‘ban exploitative practices’ in the workplace, known as the New Deal for Working People, was backed by the MP.
The abolition of ‘no-fault’ evictions and genuine leasehold reform were among the increased rights for tenants that Mr Amesbury supported.
Following the push for a Hillsborough Law following the 1989 incident that claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool fans, the Government also declared in the King's speech that it would impose a legal responsibility of transparency on public servants.
Mr Amesbury supports this, commenting: “It is a requirement for honesty from public officials, to try and prevent future injustices when major tragedies occur involving public bodies.
“This was a 2017 recommendation that came out of the experiences of the families of the victims of Hillsborough.
“It is something I have campaigned for over many years, and it is finally happening under Labour.”
