Labour's candidate for Runcorn and Helsby has called on voters to 'put their faith in him' at next week's general election.

Mike Amesbury had represented Weaver Vale since 2017, but changes to the constituency boundaries means he is now running in a new seat which incorporates the entire town of Runcorn rather than just the eastern section, as well as Frodsham, Helsby and Elton.

In a message to voters, he said: “For some, I am asking you to place your faith in me once again, while for others this will be the first time.

"My commitment is to always put constituents front and centre and that’s what I will continue to do if elected. There’s so much to celebrate in our communities. From our towns and villages to our green spaces and waterways. We are also home to world leading industrial and research facilities."

He also hit out at the Conservatives, claiming that after 14 years in power, families were 'worse off, less safe and had fewer opportunities'.

He said: "Things can be better. I want to see a strong economy with the regeneration of vacant brownfield sites. I’d like to see more well-paid, secure jobs with Labour’s New Deal for Working People, thriving high streets and genuinely affordable housing for local people.

“Our schools and NHS should be properly funded. We need more neighbourhood police and PCSOs on our streets. Switching on publicly-owned GB Energy will cut bills through investment in renewables."

He added: "After seven years as an MP, including as a shadow minister, I have dealt with 39,000 cases from constituents, with a track record of standing up for those in need and getting results, such as my law to reduce the costs of school uniform across England.

“I’m asking the people of Runcorn and Helsby County constituency to put their trust in me as their Labour parliamentary candidate on Thursday, July 4."
