A FIRE was started at a children's play area "deliberately".

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene of a fire in Runcorn this afternoon (June 1).

One engine, from the Runcorn station, arrived at Hallwood Park Avenue shortly before 3pm.

Upon arrival, crews found a fire at a children's play area.

The incident has since been reported to Cheshire Police.

A CFRS spokesperson said: "Firefighters informed police that they believed a small fire in a children's play area had been started deliberately.

"The crew put out the fire using a hose reel jet."

Cheshire Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after 3pm to find "a small fire involving play equipment which is believed to have been started deliberately".

A spokesperson for Halton Lea Police added: "County fire were called to Hallwood Park today.

"Another deliberate fire was ignited by known youths from the area.

"Kids always complain there is nowhere to play but this is just another wreckless act of Arson, destroying the very heart of the community.

"A place where it should be safe to play without this wreckless behaviour."

Police say a suspect has been identified and enquiries are ongoing.
