RESTAURANTS, pubs, cafes and takeaways in Runcorn and Widnes could save thousands of pounds on their food disposal by recycling their waste.
ReFood, which is based in Widnes, is one of the most advanced anaerobic digestion facilities in Europe.
According to the latest advice from ReFood’s commercial director, Philip Simpson, food establishments in the Widnes and Halton area could save thousands of pounds.
“With almost 175 food service businesses registered in the Halton area, the region is throwing away more than £140,000 – money that would otherwise go straight to the bottom line,” said Philip.
“At a time when every penny counts, it makes complete financial sense to embrace more innovative waste management solutions.”
The average UK restaurant throws away more than eight tonnes of food every year, and ReFood are suggesting that food waste should be recycled instead.
Recycling food waste avoids using landfills, which is better for the environment and means restaurants can save money on landfill tax.
“As well as being expensive, it’s important to remember that food waste left to rot in landfill is bad for the environment too,” said Philip.
“It emits harmful greenhouse gases considered 21 times more damaging than CO2.
“Food waste recycling is a far greener solution, as uneaten food still has plenty of value.”
Recycled food waste can be used to generate renewable energy, reducing the need for fossil fuel, and can also be repurposed as a biofertilizer.
“There really is no drawback – it’s cheaper than landfill, better for the environment, easy to implement and quick to set up regular collections,” said Philip.
