Official plans have now been submitted for up to 120 homes in Widnes, a move which has already prompted outcry from local councillors and residents about the impact on local playing fields.
Miller Homes has submitted an outline application to Halton Council for the properties along with recreational space at Prescot Road. It comes just a matter of weeks after the firm began consulting local residents. The initial plans prompted anger from councillors in Hough Green and the neighbouring ward of Highfield, with two online petitions attracting a total of more than 1,500 signatures.
In its planning documents, Miller said it has received 49 responses to its own consultation, with two being supportive.
The outline plans would see:
- Construction of up to 120 properties - a quarter of which would be classed as 'affordable'.
- A new arm added to Prescot Road roundabout to provide vehicular access.
- Additional 5v5 football pitch, remarking of additional pitches to allow. potential for an additional 7v7 pitch and 5v5 pitch.
- A new play area.
Miller said it is in discussion with Pex Hill Football Club and 'other sports clubs' to help fund delivery of on site improvements and additional equipment.
A design and access document submitted in support of the scheme, said: "The development is an opportunity to create a development of high quality which integrates seamlessly with the existing community.
"It will combine family and affordable homes alongside green infrastructure and biodiversity habitats. delivered in close proximity to high quality highways and public transport infrastructure."
Miller has already received planning permission for more than 500 properties in Widnes on land that was earmarked by the council for housing in its Delivery and Allocations Local Plan (DALP), a document which outlines the borough’s planning priorities up until 2037.
However, the land off Prescot Road is not slated for housing, but sporting/recreational green space. Miller has been reportedly eyeing the current site for more than two years, with Hough Green Cllr Harris having previously declared the fields to be 'sacrosanct' back in 2021.
No date has yet been set for a decision.
