POLICE closed the M56 in both directions for several hours on Thursday (May 19) after concerns about a man on a bridge.
The incident happened in the early hours when police were called to reports of the man on a bridge between junctions 12 and 14.
As a result, the motorway was closed in both directions until just after 9am, when it was re-opened to eastbound traffic.
After enagaging with the man for around five hours, he was eventually led safely away from the scene.
The closure led to miles of tailbacks and delays of up to 90 minutes.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At around 2.30am on Thursday, May 19, police were called to reports of concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge on the M56 between junction 12 and 14.
"Officers attended the scene and engaged with the man or several hours.
"The man was taken to a place of safety at around 7.40am.
"The road closures have since been lifted although traffic is still heavy in the area and motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journey."
