A WOMAN is in a critical condition after being assaulted in Widnes.
Police were called to Frank Street in Halton View at 11.20pm last night after reports of a disturbance.
A 36-year-old woman was taken to Whiston Hospital where her condition is described as critical.
A 43-year-old man who sustained cuts and bruises was also taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident. He remains in custody."
One man who lives nearby said: "I heard the unmerciful screams of a baby. I went outside to see what was going on.
"I saw a woman and a baby being taken away in an ambulance. The baby was crying.
"We heard there had been a stabbing."
Another resident said the police helicopter had been flying round the area for ages.
