Runcorn Town 4 - Caernarfon Town 0

3:30pm Friday 19th September 2008

Runcorn Town showed the quality within the squad with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Welsh Premier League outfit Caernarfon Town, with only missed chances keeping the score from being at least double that.

Town got off to the perfect start with Jason Carey heading in Ste Latham’s corner after just four minutes, and it got even better for Town six minutes later when Carey played in John McEvoy, with the forward shooting low into the bottom corner from 20-yards out.

Danny Cummins had a couple of long range efforts which tested the visiting keeper, with Caernarfon’s best effort of the half, indeed the game, coming after 34 minutes when their forward shot well wide from the edge of the box after breaking clear of Town’s defence.

The third goal came after 54 minutes with Neil Larkin playing a great ball through to Carey, who beat the offside trap before slotted home his second from the edge of the box. Another Larkin ball a couple of minutes later put Clint Burton clear but his attempted lob was saved by the keeper, and Burton also got clear moments later but tried to round the keeper when he should have squared it to McEvoy.

Ste Latham then saw a shot from outside the box fly just past the post, with Caernarfon almost playing themselves into trouble with McEvoy getting onto a poor pass across the defence and trying to round the keeper when a shot maybe would have been more fruitful.

With ten minutes left Carey laid the ball off to Burton in the box with the forward’s shot tipped around the post for a corner. Burton finally got the goal his play deserved in the 88th minutes when McEvoy passed to him in the box, with Burton rounding the keeper and finding the bottom corner.

It was almost five just before the final whistle with Burton finding McEvoy who hit a lovely curling shot from 25-yards that came back off the bar.
