A GIFT of £1,213 has been made in memory of a fun loving boy, to thank intensive care doctors and nurses for trying to save his life.
Daniel Smith, aged nine, of Palacefields, Runcorn, died after being struck by a bus on Runcorn Busway, on July 5, last year.
His mum, Vicky Lewis, presented the donation to Alder Hey Hospital last Thursday, on what would have been his 10th birthday.
Mum-of-three, Vicky, aged 28, said: “They did so much to try and save him, it can never be repaid.
“They treated him so gently, still talking to him by name even after he was brain stem dead.
“They are going to use the money to buy memory boxes for bereaved families and make the family room more inviting.”
The money was raised from donations and a fun day for Daniel at his school, Palacefields Primary.
Vicky, said: “We got together and talked about all the things Daniel enjoyed. They had a disco, party games, face painting and sold cakes.
“Daniel was a lovely boy.
“He loved Dr Who and computer games and playing football.”
Vicky is keeping Daniel’s memory alive by talking about him to his sisters, Bethany, aged seven, and four-week-old Grace.
She added: “We still talk about Daniel all time. He is still a part of our lives.
“He had a gentle nature and would have been so made up to have been a big brother.
“I’d like to urge children to be more careful when they are out having fun.
“It only takes a second to make the difference between life and death.
“Daniel never went on the busway. That one time a bus happened to be coming.
“At the time of his accident, I was devastated but if nine years was all the time I was allowed to have him, they were nine brilliant years.”
