A POLICE investigation into the death of a Widnes mum in a collision has concluded that the driver will not face prosecution.
Cathie Stankevitch, 54, was killed in a tragic road accident when she was knocked down by an out of control van in Hough Green Road, Widnes, on Sunday, September 27 last year.
Her husband, Kevin, 55, was also injured in the collision.
They were walking their new puppies along a footpath when a Citreon Berlingo van mounted the pavement behind them.
A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Having reviewed all of the evidence a decision has been made that no charges will be brought in this case.
“The family of Cathie Stankevitch and the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision have all been informed of the decision.”
Cathie’s son, former rugby league star John Stankevitch, 36, from Hough Green, said: “It is just a massive tragedy all round.
“We have suffered a hell of a lot as a family. It has been a really tough time.
“We’ve got to pick up the pieces - dad, by what he’s seen and the driver who will have to live with this forever.”
The driver from Widnes, who had a valid licence and insurance, had suffered a fit at the wheel, the police told Cathie’s family.
The man had been passed fit to drive after undergoing surgery.
“It was a genuine accident,” said John, who has now vowed to dedicate his life to running a charity for the young and old in memory of his mum.
The Cathie Stankevitch Foundation was launched at an 80s themed party at the Select Security Stadium on Saturday.
“I would never have become a professional rugby player without the sacrifices my parents made,” added John.
“I think of my mum every day and those thoughts spur me on.
“I want to use my mum’s attitude and energy to make this foundation a massive success.”
A golf tournament between former Widnes and St Helens RL players will be the first big fundraising event in the summer.
